Designing a Serene Room

When choosing colors for the room, select pale hues. A pale blue and green are like a peaceful ocean scene and light tans remind us of the sand. Light colors are relaxing. Keep your colors to only 2-3 for the room. When there too many colors does not allow the eye to feel restful. The minimal color scheme keeps things simple and clean. It is a good idea to select your paint color last. There is a much larger selection of paint colors then things like the carpet, tile, fabric trim or the fabric selection for the furniture you choose. Select all those larger elements prior to selecting your paint color. You can even get custom colors mixed to get the exact color you want so your choices of paint color are really endless.

Select soft fabrics and fabric trim. Soft equals comfort and comfort equals relaxation. Use fabrics with texture and richness. Soft texture provides a cozy environment. Try using a chenille fabric as a main fabric. Some chenilles are extra soft. Adding fabric trims such as brush fringe to a pillow adds another level of richness and softness. Use those pale colors with low contrast to all your fabrics and fabric trim.

Less is more. Keep furniture and accessories to a minimum. Simplicity is restful for the mind and eyes. Do not clutter your space with too many unnecessary items. Keep things simple and utilitarian.

Add a restful ambience by using lamps with low wattage. The correct type of lighting is very important to creating a serene place to relax. A warm colored shade can provide a relaxing light. Add dimmers to overhead lights that can be turned up and down depending on the event in the room.

Add materials that bring in nature. Nature often nourishes us with relaxation. The sun, ocean, forests and a nice meadow can relax us. Bring some of those elements inside. Some examples of this would be bamboo, wicker, cotton and linens.

New Project with BVM Fabric Trim

Here are some photos a customer sent of a upholstery project where she used our fabric trim as a welt.

The photos were taken with her phone camera so they are a little bit dark.

The trim she used was the cream twist cord fabric trim.

She did a nice job of reupholstering!

How to mix and match fabrics in a room

When mixing and matching different fabrics and fabric trims in a room there a few basic things to keep in mind.

Scale and Shape: Keep the main fabrics in a different scale and a variety of shapes. Basic scale refers to large, medium and small. For example: A large floral, a medium plaid and a small print work well together. Shape refers to what shapes or types are the design in the fabric. I think it is important to keep the number of large prints in a room to minimum. You can add interest with more small prints, stripes and plaids.

Color relevancy: When mixing a group of 5-6 fabrics, try to have some of the colors from one fabric match some of the colors in other fabrics. It can be just 1 or 2 colors matching from one fabric to another to pull it together. Try not to worry about all the colors from one fabric matching all the colors from another fabric. Just make them relevant to each other.

Adding fabric trims and cording: Whether it is a contemporary or traditional design, adding fabric trims or cording to your fabrics can add a custom look. For example use the same cording on a pillow on your bed as a cording welt on a chair in your bedroom. You can visit my website at www.bvmtrimandfringe.com for a selection of fabric trims.

Creative Twist: Remember, it is actually more interesting to the eye to have some of your colors similar but not an exact match. This can sometimes be tricky to achieve but you can practice with different color samples before making a final decision. Try different swatches together and see how it still works even when the colors are not exactly the same.

Give yourself distance: It is important to look at your color combinations from a distance. Sometimes one can get caught up in looking at the details in a fabric. Step away and look at the fabrics. Your eye will see them differently. A fabric that may have looked green up close can look a shade of brown from a distance. Some patterns are so small the colors that you may have been worried about are now blended into one color.

Window Treatment / Drapery / Curtain Ideas - Using Fabric Trim to add interest.

All of us do-it yourselfers are always looking for new and creative ways to style up our homes.

This creative window treatment is the creation of one of my customers, Lara MacDonald.

Lara added brush fringe trim to the lower portion of her drapery panels with a switch in fabrics.

Adding the fabric trim to the lower portion of the curtain is unexpected and unique. It gives it a custom look you aren’t as likely to find pre-made in a home store.

Lara added a matching pillow on her bed.
